Psoriasis and male fertility
Hello, my husband of two years has psoriasis, so I am new to it and just learning. We are trying to have our first baby, and I saw some information online that psoriasis contributes to infertility in men (but not in women). The only thing I was able to find on your site on the topic was this https://www.papaa.org/learn-about-psoriasis-and-psoriatic-arthritis/fertility-and-pregnancy/, which is not very clear. Do you know if many men with psoriasis suffer with infertility and, if so, what has worked to conquer it? Or do you believe that most men with psoriasis are able to father children? Thank you for your help!
It’s an interesting question which we’ve found hard to explain through any published research. anecdotaly we do hear about this issue, but as you are probably aware it is a very complex issue with many competing explanations to why conception doesn’t happen. I will ask our medical advisor to run a literature search to see if there has been any recent updates on the subject. I have psoriasis and we had fertility issues, and at one point was told that we would not conceive naturally, that was proven wrong as we eventually had two daughters naturally, although it took sometime and there is a 5-year age gap between them. In our case I was the issue, with low sperm count, I did visit a urologist and fertility specialist and was told that they did see more than expected men with psoriasis and infertility, but that may not be a scientific answer and just coincidence for any number of reasons. I was prescribed a course of antibiotics and told to wear loose underwear and take cool baths, whether any of that made any difference I cannot say, but given we didn’t expect to have children at that time, the pressure was off somewhat, so maybe that made the difference instead.
