There are two types of cholesterol: LDL (low-density lipoprotein), sometimes called ’bad’ cholesterol, which makes up most of your body's cholesterol; HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or ‘good’ cholesterol, absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver. If you have too much LDL in your blood vessels they can become blocked which can lead to a heart attack or a stroke. The main cause of LDL in the blood is a diet consisting in foods high in fat, being overweight, not exercising enough, drinking, and smoking although it can sometimes also be hereditary.
