Psoriasis can cause raised, scaly, itchy or sore patches of skin. It may affect the scalp, elbows, knees, hands, feet, nails, skin folds or genital area. It is not contagious. Symptoms can come and go, and triggers such as stress, infection or skin irritation may worsen them for some people.

Around 1 in 4 people with psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis. Look out for ongoing joint pain, swelling or stiffness, especially after rest or in the morning. Heel pain, back pain, nail changes and a whole swollen finger or toe can also be signs. Early assessment is important.
