Generally, no special preparation is needed, but you may need to remove any clothing or jewellery that might interfere with the scan.

Yes, X-rays are safe when used properly. The amount of radiation is very small, and the benefits of diagnosing medical issues usually outweigh the risks. All radiographers are trained to use X-rays safely.

The actual X-ray typically takes just a few minutes; however, more time may be needed to position you in the right way to get the best images possible.

It’s best to remove jewellery or anything with metal if it's around the area to be imaged. For instance, if you are attending for a wrist x-ray, you will be expected to remove your watch, but not a necklace or bra.

You may be asked to change into a gown, depending on the area being imaged or if your clothing has any logos, large metallic details like zips or metal buttons.

Inform the radiographer right away. They may suggest a different imaging method or take extra precautions to protect your baby. In some cases, it may still be appropriate to image you, but your radiographer will walk you through the process.

Do not worry, X-rays are 2D images, and the radiographer will be positioning the affected body part in an evidence-based position to get the anatomical regions effectively for reporting.
