MRI uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of your body’s soft tissues without radiation. It’s often used for brain, spine, and joint issues.

Yes, you must remove any metal as it can interfere with the MRI. This includes jewellery, watches, and certain dental work. If you have a pacemaker or an internal implant, such as a joint replacement, you will need to discuss this with the radiographers before scanning to ensure that they are MRI safe. 

MRI is very safe, but because it uses magnets, people with certain metal implants may not be able to have an MRI. Always inform the radiographer about any implants.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal (e.g., zippers, buttons). You may be asked to change into a gown depending on the area being scanned.

Yes, the MRI machine can be loud. You’ll be given earplugs or headphones to help reduce the noise. Sometimes you will be able to listen to music during the scan.

Yes, it’s important to stay still so that the images are clear. If you need a break, let the radiographer know. You will be given a buzzer/alarm to hold during the scan, to be able to let the radiographers know you need assistance. The radiographers will also be able to talk to you through the Tanoy in the MRI. 

Some people feel anxious in enclosed spaces, but many machines are now wider and open. If you’re concerned, talk to your doctor about options to help you relax before your appointment. Do let the radiographers looking after you know as well, they will do their very best to support you through the scan.

Some implants may not be compatible with MRI. Always tell the radiographer if you have a pacemaker, implant, or metal in your body.

Some MRIs require contrast to help highlight certain areas, but not all do. The technician will let you know if it’s necessary for your procedure.

The team are ensuring that there are no chances that there are metallic objects or “foreign objects” within your body. If you have ever had an injury to the eyes, the doctors or radiographers may request a quick X-ray of your orbits (eyes) to ensure that there is no hidden metal.

Some people have asked this previously, and while an MRI can look at brain activity, it will not directly show thoughts or dreams.
