If you have tattoos, you may be interested to know if these show up on your imaging. While the tattoos do not show up unless the ink contains metal, the contrast in the ink may be visible on some types of imaging, like MRI; however should not affect your results.

The radiologist will analyse your images, and your doctor will discuss the results with you, usually within a few weeks, depending on the urgency.

The images will be reviewed by a radiologist who will send a report to the doctor who referred you for the scan, who will discuss the findings with you.

In most cases, you can take your medications as usual, but let the radiographers know what medications you’re on, especially if you’re having a contrast study. There are some imaging tests which may require you to stop medication. Please follow any preparation material that is sent to you or call the imaging department if you are unsure.

If you feel uncomfortable at any time, let the radiographer know immediately. They can make adjustments to help you feel better.

You may be able to drive after most imaging tests. However, if contrast dye or sedation was used, you may be advised to have someone drive you home.

It depends on the procedure and the hospital’s policy. In some cases, family members may be able to accompany you, but they might not be allowed in the room during certain scans (like CT or X-ray). If you require assistance or a chaperone, please do let the radiographers or imaging department know.

Some procedures, like some CT scans with contrast, may require fasting for several hours beforehand. You’ll be given specific instructions before your appointment; these will usually be in your appointment letter.
