Heatwave medicine safety

Beware Of The Sun And Methotrexate Reactions
| Category: Latest feature

With the current heatwave in the UK, the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) has issued guidance to help people with psoriatic disease protect their medicines and stay well during hot weather.

Why is heat a concern?

High temperatures can affect how well your medicines work and may even make them unsafe. This is especially important for those managing psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

Key advice to follow:

  • Store medicines in a cool place, away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving them in hot cars, bags, or on windowsills.
  • Keep refrigerated medicines cold. This includes biologics and insulin, which must be stored in the fridge as instructed.
  • Check your medicines regularly. If they change colour, smell, or appearance, do not use them and speak to your pharmacist.
  • Be aware of increased sun sensitivity. Some medicines, like methotrexate, can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and avoid strong sun between 11am and 3pm.
  • Stay hydrated. Some medications can increase the risk of dehydration, so drink plenty of fluids and watch for symptoms like dizziness or tiredness.

If you have any concerns about your medicines or how to manage your condition during hot weather, contact your healthcare professional.

Stay safe and take care.
