About the position

This is an exciting opportunity to work for the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance (PAPAA), which is a leading charity working in the field of rheumatology and dermatology. The charity dates back to the early 1990s and provides support services to people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, which also includes both carers and healthcare professionals.

Job title: Engagement and Communications Officer

Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week), permanent. (3-month probationary period)

Salary: £24k - £28k per annum (depending on experience)

Location: This is a full-time permanent position based on a hybrid model of working from home and in our self-contained rural commercial business office setting in South St Albans, Hertfordshire.

About the role: The role of Engagement and Communications Officer is to raise the awareness and public profile of PAPAA and its work to support people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The ultimate aim is to increase visibility that will lead to increased support and donations.  This can come in the form of publicity, marketing and communications, representing the organisation at events, organising large-scale fundraisers and awareness campaigns or liaising with benefactors, with the potential to gain support via donations.  All of this should include input from PAPAA’s patient engagement groups appropriately as part of our ethically and sustainable campaign (Care, Cause, Cure).

General area of work: Marketing, communications and campaigning with external parties across numerous settings. These will include organising events, attending meetings that are relevant to the promotion of the charity, engaging with supporters, donors and PAPAA’s patient engagement groups. The use of the charity’s digital presence and social media pages will be a vital part of the role. It is expected that the successful applicant is able to understand how these tools can enhance and be used to reinforce the charity’s status and standing as a good cause, and that it is seen as a vital part of the care and support of people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Reporting and structure: PAPAA is a small dedicated hard-working team, therefore it is key to be able to respect other’s roles, whilst being able to enhance and assist colleagues as and when required. Reporting will be to the senior executive team and it is expected that the successful candidate will be able to bring solutions and identify the barriers to success. To include delivering the aims and objectives of the charity, via all available routes, where the charity can be seen as a dynamic and key player in the advocacy role on behalf of people affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Job Description:

Main Tasks:

  • Raise the profile and increase the visibility of the charity
  • Increase awareness and communicate the role of the charity
  • Support current activities and develop new initiatives
  • Market PAPAA services
  • Develop appropriate partnerships that enhance PAPAA’s work
  • Develop opportunities to gain funds and generate donations
  • Increase general income stream opportunities
  • Engage on behalf of the charity in areas of activity, which meet the campaigning issues
  • Develop merchandising support material
  • Expand and enhance social media pathways on regular basis
  • Create regular media coverage and develop media contacts and networks
  • Expand the existing forums and develop constituent patient groups

Person specification: A high level of education and or equivalent experience, potentially with qualifications in management, marketing, communications or public relations.

The role will suit an independent highly-organised person with excellent written skills who is able to meet goals and deadlines, whilst contributing to a strategy that delivers the charity’s ambition. A self-starter who will be able to complete and finish tasks, but is mindful that reporting and following instructions is key to success.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities:
