Research in plain language

Market research.jpg

The January issue of the British Journal of Dermatology sees the launch of a new initiative: plain language summaries of selected studies. The BJD plain language summaries will open up important research to patients who might otherwise be deterred by medical terms and inscrutable language.

It is also hoped that it will provide a useful resource for the general public and any media wishing to publicise breaking research.

Each summary will be no more than 250 words, highlighting the key points of the research, in clear language that is easy to understand without being patronising.

The summaries will provide a ‘taster’ of the article that presents the objectives and key findings of the study, allowing people to decide if the full article will be of interest to them.

The summaries can be accessed via the journal’s home page, and here for January: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bjd.12753/abstract
